Nero d'Avola Adesso Sicilia i.g.t.

Simply put, a nice wine at a reasonable price. Synthetic cork. Warmth of ripe fruit flavours, plums, cherries, currant. Clean finish. Pairs well with red meats, sharp cheeses, or in our case, wood oven pizza. The Only a few bottles left in stores in Montréal, the Pepsi Forum location is your best bet. Or order online at saq.com

Pinto Noir from Chile?

This past weekend I a friend gave us a bottler of Cono Sur Pinot Noir to try. Chile has not to this point been known for their Pinot Noir. But as this region continues to emerge and surprise with new offerings we decided to give it an honest try.

Upon opening the nose seemed very subtle, almost weak. The wine sat open to breathe for 30-45 minutes (not decanted). The first sip again seemed rather thin and didn't offer much depth. This wine was paired with a loin of pork stuffed with apricot, prunes & gala apple. As the meal progressed the wine opened up bit by bit. Notes of cherry, and lightly floral; acidity was evident but not excessive with regards to the Pinot Noir varietal. On the whole this wine was different when compared to the usual offerings from Chile but on its own was not memorable. It is however worthwhile to try as this appears to be the tip of a varietal soon to emerge from South America.

New wine to try

I was just alerted to this wonderful Brunello by a colleague. Barbi Brunello di Montalcino is available at the SAQ (#00742478) for $44.25 per bottle. I will give my own impressions when i have a chance to enjoy a bottle. If you get around to trying it, let me know what you think.

Try to get the 2004, it is noted to be the best year to date.

Wine Find

I recently came across this great wine under $30. We enjoyed it last weekend with a lovely roast loin of pork with a grainy mustard pan gravy. Nice acidity to cut through the richness of the meat and its sauce. Flavours were dominated by cherry and black plums.
This wine is available at the SAQ (#00573402) Mercurey Michel Juillot 2006. Price$28.30
